Somerset Mews, 10-16 Hardcastle Street, Belfast.
Brownfield Residential Award Winner 2006
Comments of the Judging Panel:-
"This scheme has brought back life to a forgotten corner of the city centre. Despite severe physical constraints, 4 attractive town houses have been developed, securing optimum use of the land. The dwellings exhibit the highest standards of workmanship, the result of excellent site supervision. The scheme is a model of good practice in brownfield development and is commended as such."

Editorial
"Local building contractor, AM Cole, has been awarded a prestigious award for construction excellence. The company picked up the Award for the ‘Best Brownfield Residential Project’ at the annual CEF/SPECIFY Construction Excellence Awards at a gala ceremony at the Culloden Hotel, attended by over 450 of the leaders in the Northern Ireland construction industry.
The award, given to AM Cole for the development of Somerset Mews on Belfast’s Hardcastle Street, recognises the contractor’s workmanship, quality and commitment to modern construction principles of ‘brownfield’ development (building or re-developing on exisiting building sites rather than expanding further into Greenfield areas).
Commenting on the award, Peter Cole of AM Cole said: “We were delighted to receive this award against stiff competition from some of the biggest names in the Northern Ireland construction industry. The award confirms our company’s commitment to quality and is a glowing endorsement of our construction methods.”
Somerset Mews is a unique brownfield development of four three-bedroom town houses with parking in the heart of Belfast City. The houses are named after Thomas Somerset, the owner of the Linen Mill directly opposite the Mews. The original mill premises constructed by Thomas Somerset were an important and integral part of the ongoing industrialisation of Belfast which took place throughout the nineteenth century and, indeed, the mill building was one of the first reinforced concrete framed structures in the British Isles.
Many years later, after the building had outlived its original use, it was ably adjusted to modern day living with conversion to apartments, thus providing much needed living accommodation to the centre of Belfast. The avant garde style of the apartments is continued with this new construction of small mews houses, which are much needed in the ever improving Belfast City Centre. Designed by The Boyd Partnership for Dado Developments, these four mews houses continue in the vein of the last two centuries in that the fresh idea provides what is needed in the right area at a most suitable time."
